Flash fiction by Joe Bielecki

Until the Night is Over

Hot breath and sweat and bodies and friction. Lips locked and spit swapping, fencing tongues and eyes bulging or tightly closed. Hands grasping. Rolling and turning.

What is the difference between passion and love?

Susie and Billy were not old enough to be doing what they were doing but they were old enough to want to be doing it.

And the years passed and they became old enough and they still wanted to do it. Not always with each other but there was still a tether between them. They became an old flame booty call comfort food best friend lover partner and everything else that they could be for each other.

What are the results of mutual infatuation?

And when they finished they did not want to do it again like movies and songs told them they would or should. They just held each other. Naked sticky bodies fusing into one being. Lightly kissing whatever part of the other was in range out of reflexive affection.

Sometimes it was angry or drunken or clumsy or just bad. But it was always the way that they wanted it.

When is forever over?

They were both so warm. So sweaty. But they wrapped themselves in the blankets of the bed they were in. The blankets added an element to the smell in the room. Each of their scents and the blankets and the room and it was a smell that would forever excite them whenever they smelled anything like it.

And they would fight about it but then calm down. When Billy slept with Sally Susie was not happy and slept with Freddy. But Freddy was angry with Sally and none of any of that meant anything to anyone except revenge. It was a weapon and it was not as good as it was supposed to be as far as Billy and Susie were concerned. And they told each other so. And they understood each other better. And that night was one of the best nights of their lives.

When do you know how to explain how you feel?

And they fell asleep together happy and content and feeling connected to someone else. And they woke up and didn't feel different than they did the day before. And they looked at each other and they giggled feeling accomplished.

And they grew old and disconnected and connected and they always had each other even when they didn't have each other even though they never promised anything to each other. They never had to promise anything.

When does commitment expire?

They weren't afraid of anyone finding out but they didn't tell anyone either. It was something just between them. Just for them. The kids at school found out through osmosis.

They never said I love you. They never had to say anything to each other. The words were extra.
