late nights on earth

this is for the world that turns after most have gone to bed. maybe your shift hasn’t ended or has barely started. maybe you’re dancing until closing time and ushered back out into the night-light when the last minutes of neon reflect in puddles of oil. perhaps you are somewhere in nature in the deep dark with secret hands digging dirt. you might be half of an argument in a parking lot or that person sipping coffee in a diner, dripping caffeine or even tears on notebook pages. it’s possible you can’t get back to bed and are restless or invigorated. are you watching the sun come up again and running from it? you are wild and wonderful, sad and clever. i see you even with my eyes closed, fast asleep while you are chasing midnight or money or the moon or some feeling. these songs are for all of you night-dwellers and all of us who dabble in that darkness when we can.
