TERSE. Journal

"How will you create the world? This is the main question we hope to contend with here. What stories will you tell? What world will you make?"

Black Telephone Magazine

"I want to know what would you say if you stepped into the phone booth and pulled the curtain closed behind you. I want your manifestos, your confessions, your unsent love letters. I want you to say the unsayable. Sometimes we can do no better than chaining ourselves to the pursuits that are the least horrifying to us. But sometimes we are lucky enough to do something else—to say something else. Consider this your invitation. Speak.

Music never fails to evoke real emotions connected to real memories, however fleeting, superficial, profound, blissful, or distressing those emotions might be.

We know most of our fellow human beings can relate, and we think sharing the stories we have, along with the songs that conjure them, is a great way to connect with each other while building some pretty groovy (or, at the very least, very 'interesting') playlists in the process."

"We are a very bad pony. Maybe we have always been that way. Maybe we had a particularly bad childhood where instead of hay or grass, we were fed a large amount of Starburst. Mental Papercuts

"We live in a world of mental papercuts. Messages left unread, posts never liked, pains so small and petty that your mind doesn’t bother to numb the sting. They don’t pierce, or throb, or sear, or burn; they ache, and itch, and for some reason, you just can’t take your mind off of them.

Mental Papercuts is an online journal committed to showcasing the prickliest flash fiction and nonfiction. We welcome the quirky, the melodramatic, the earnest, the irreverent, the goofy, and the macabre; if a story can make you feel something in under a thousand words, it has a home here."

"Quail Bell Magazine is a place for real and unreal stories. Our readers are curious, creative, and compassionate fairy punks who are citizens of the world. All members of The Quail Bell Crew respect and embrace all cultures, excluding only the sexist, racist, homophobic, and otherwise unkind and uncompromising. It is because of this open-mindedness and positivity that Quail Bell Magazine is fortunate enough to publish content by contributors from across the globe. Quail Bell Magazine encourages original thought, open dialogue and community-building through content that explores the relationship between The Real and The Unreal. We value the arts, history, folklore, and other oddities often not mentioned in mainstream magazines. As a woman-run publication, we strive to publish only the highest-quality content that not only challenges readers, but lets them have a little fun and maybe enjoy a little cuteness, too. We are not attempting to produce a magazine that is purely literary or purely journalistic, but, rather, somewhere in between for results that are inspiring and informative. In all that we write, draw, photograph, and otherwise make, The Quail Bell Crew will honor this editorial mission statement."

Parentheses Journal

"Parentheses Journal is a new collaborative venture in the quest for sharing art, operating on the quintessence of art for art’s sake.

We create our own utopias in the imperfections of being. The voices contain within figments of dust and deep trenches, everyday harmonies and soliloquies in the sand. The aesthetic of bent dust hardbacks and thick lettered illegible syntaxes in ancient caverns nudges. A semblance of everydayness, colloquial artifacts of experience, membranes of telling over war-frayed leaves rouses.

You belong."
Picture
Glass Poetry Press

"We are interested in poetry that enacts the artistic and creative precision of glass. We are not bound by any specific aesthetic; our only mission is to publish collections of high quality writing. We like poems that show a careful understanding of language, music, passion and creativity."

The entire organization is run by students, mostly hailing from the English Department of the University of Amsterdam, and they work hard to bring you a qualitatively high-standing, free magazine four times per year. Writer’s Block has grown above and beyond a local student magazine, and currently sports a great variety of readers from all over the world, both students and non-students alike.

However, Writer’s Block is nothing without its community: the greater part of our content is provided by readers like you, who bravely step up and send in work for us to review and potentially publish. After all, if we don’t get your submissions, that would mean we won’t be able to fill our issues, which would make us and you, our readers, very sad. Capsule Stories

"Capsule Stories is a print literary magazine published once every season. Our first issue was published on March 1, 2019, and we accept submissions year-round.

We have a penchant for pretty words, an affinity to the melancholy, and an undeniably time-ful aura. We believe that stories exist in a specific moment, and that that moment is what makes those stories unique.

What we’re really looking for are stories that can touch the heart. Stories that come from the heart. Stories about love, identity, the self, the world, the human condition. Stories that show what living in this world as the human you are is like.
There’s so much noise out there, bombarding us constantly with an endless stream of information and it becomes harder and harder to hear ourselves think. This is a quiet place for you to sit, read, remember, and reflect.
We believe that words shape us as individuals. Words stay with us as we go through life, and the words we kept sacred yesterday may be different than the words we need today. Whatever you may be experiencing right at this time in your life, there are the right words for it. The right words comfort us in need. They breathe life into our beings. They show us how we feel. And we are here to give them to you."

We aim to publish at least five titles per year--some combination of anthologies, books and chapbooks by individual authors, micro-chaps, zines, etc. We may wind up publishing more than that, but we want to make sure we have the time and energy to put our all behind each publication. And what do we mean by we are committed to publishing the works of marginalized writers? We mean that we are looking for thrilling feats of (literary) derring-do by LGBTQ+ writers, writers of color, women, disabled writers, neurodivergent writers, immigrant writers/people writing in English as a second language, etc. We're not making any rules like "we'll never publish anything by a straight white guy," but we will be focusing on publishing writers who are underrepresented in some way."

Picture
Cease, Cows

"You may see the title of our silly literary magazine and ask yourself, “What the [insert f-bomb] is that?” We’ll appease your burning curiosity.

It’s from a novel, One Hundred Years of Solitude, by the excellent Gabriel García Márquez. Now you have secret knowledge. Use it wisely. Or don’t. Whatevs. It’s your life.

At Cease, Cows we want to explore the contemporary, the strange, the big questions. We want to feel cultural pulses, expose mental arteries, bathe in both the sanguine and sanguinary. We want to publish prose with fire and truth. Humans may be animals, but the power of words can allow us to revel in or transcend the physical. The best literature achieves both. Or something profound like that.

If you’re a writer, send us your best work. Hell, always write your best work, whether you send it to us or not.

Life is short."

The Charles River Journal

"CRJ is a literary miscellany. We believe earnestly in the virtue of miscellany as a mode of literary adventuring. Isaac Asimov describes the debt he felt he owed, as a reader and a writer, to the same principle, thusly: "All this incredibly miscellaneous reading, the result of lack of guidance, left its indelible mark. My interest was aroused in twenty different directions and all those interests remained." What better goal for a literary magazine than to arouse interest in myriad directions? Accordingly, we publish all sorts: poetry, fiction, and nonfiction prose, criticism, miniatures, translations, visual art, excerpts, reprints, chapbook tuck-ins, and work in other genres and formats. theta wave

"we are a literary mag based in Tiohtiá:ke, Montréal. we are independent and don’t give a fuck if you have credentials.

we want ur experimental poetics, sonic explorations, literary prose, and absurdist rants. we want ur angry essays, aesthetic criticisms, and a transcription of your recent research k-hole. we want ur investigative findings and archival unearthings. we want features on artists you love, interviews with people you love, and reviews on books you love. we want ur illustration, comics, visual art, paintings, films, mixed-media, sculpture, installation art. we want ur full-moon purge.

we don't have deadlines or a timeline. we ride the wave of time, birthing publications when ripe.

Entropy

"ENTROPY is a website featuring literary and related non-literary content. We like to think of ourselves as more than just a magazine or a website, but as also a community space. We seek to create a space where writers can engage with other writers, can participate in a literary community, and where thinkers can collaborate and share both literary and non-literary ideas. This means that we seek to cover topics such as video games, graphic novels, interactive literature, science fiction, fantasy, music, film, art, and other topics in addition to literary reviews, interviews, conversations, and articles on experimental literature, translation, small press practices, and performance. We appreciate diverse beliefs and perspectives and want to encourage open discussion through a variety of opinions. (Therefore, the views and opinions of contributors are not necessarily the views of Entropy as a whole.)"

Sundress Publications

"A 501(c)(3) non-profit literary press collective founded in 2000, Sundress Publications is entirely volunteer-run, publishes chapbooks and full-length works in both print and digital formats, and hosts a variety of online journals. Our mission is to champion great work—especially by persons under-represented in literary publishing—and we welcome writers and artists regardless of race, sexual orientation, gender identity/expression, disability, religion, class, veteran status, and educational background.

We are firm believers in fostering artists whose work is worthy of recognition. Sundress Publications works closely with its authors, artists, and contributors, providing feedback and assistance through every stage of the publication process. For this reason, we do not and cannot publish works we do not love whole-heartedly.

Our aesthetic sensibilities run the gamut from traditional to innovative; we do not align ourselves with a single school or style. We seek works in all genres by intelligent, creative humans that speak to other intelligent, creative humans. In many ways, Sundress Publications envisions the manuscripts we publish as concept albums, not merely as collections of hot singles. We are most interested in the overall effect created by the artist, how the parts act in concert to create the whole."

The Hedgehog Poetry Press

"The Hedgehog Poetry Press launched in October 2017, although our first publication was our magazine ‘A Restricted View From Under The Hedge’ which appeared in late March the following year.

At the moment, we plan to publish four issues of the magazine, two collections in book form, two collections in pamphlet form and a variety of other pamphlets each year, although it really does depend on whether anybody wants them as we are entirely funded by sales.

Submissions for collections will be taken from competitions, whilst all other publications will be ‘by invitation’.

We are proud to be the home for the Cult of the Spiny Hog, which is our very own ‘club’ for readers and writers of poetry."

Rejection Letters

"We started off in with the idea of publishing fictional rejection letters because we all get rejection letters and they always suck, so why not have a little fun with it, right?

We published mostly rejection letters to everything from the zombie apocalypse to that drunk couple arguing in front of your apartment at 1am.

We opened it up to weird little poems about things like Nicolas Cage’s Superman and affairs in motels.

We opened it up to strange fiction like a girl who melts like chocolate in a jacuzzi and eating another’s brains with a melon-baller.

We opened it up to heartbreaking CNF about dad leaving because of the heat.

We do what we want.

We’ll see what we do next…"

Second Chance Lit

"Second Chance Lit is an online literary magazine - a place solely for previously rejected poetry and short prose - founded in 2020 by editor-in-chief David Wasserman.

The online literary magazine community is amazing, supportive, and have an immensely difficult task accepting and rejecting submissions. It is our hope that Second Chance will be viewed as a spot to showcase those amazing pieces that didn’t quite fit somewhere else and that other lit mags will point writers in our direction when they have an exceptional submission which doesn’t quite fit their current issue or aesthetic.

Your work was good - is good. It just wasn’t the right fit or at the right time or at the right place. Let us give it a home here, a second chance."

We are a fully volunteer-based magazine that works thanks to the womxn who believe in its vision.

There are words you are afraid to write. Write them. Then send them to us."
