Verse Shapes

Interior Design

Architectural wood moldings--
crown, rail, base, and trim at
doors and windows, as well
as fireplace mantels--
are sized in proportion
to the spaces they
ornament,
a plain profile
for small
rooms,
bold
and
richly
carved
for rooms
of state.

Crescent Moon

                               The
                     moon in
              her crescent
          phase had a
      pair of horns,
    people said in
  ancient Egypt,
 like a white cow
or the beautiful
goddess Hathor,
shining by night,
 which might
  just elucidate
    in the Mother
      Goose rhyme
         why the cow
            jumped
                  over the
                           moon.

Inclined Plane

Praise
to Archimedes
for the lever, the screw,
the displacement of water to find
the volume of a body, the word eureka,
and the inclined plane we employ in construction.

Table Lamp

         Topped
         by a con-
        cave shade
      of parchment,
   or the yellow skin
 of a victim stretched
over a wire frame, the
            lamp
       assumes the
     form of a pine-
   apple sheathed in
  mathematical rows
  of greenish brown
  leaves like darts or
   old dragon scales
    mounted on a
        square of
   inverted scrolls.
